The economic disparity between the Gateway Cities and Boston has been increasing, even though the Gateway City Formation policy from 2007 was to bridge this gap. This fissure is causing socio-spatial injustice in Massachusetts State.
Massachusetts Gateway cities are midsize urban centers that anchor regional economies around the state. For generations, these communities were home to industries that offered its people good jobs and a “gateway” to the American dream. Over the past several decades, manufacturing jobs slowly disappeared. Lacking resources and capacity to rebuild and reposition, Gateway Cities have been slow to draw new economic investment.
